Day 10 - Moffatt to Kinross, 81 miles

Our overnight stay in Moffat was a delight. We stayed in the very best Guest House, the Buchan, run by Brenda & Chris. In stark contrast to a few of the B&Bs, they couldn't do enough to help, offering a free wash and dry of our cycle clothes and a really friendly environment.

Assos undercarriage cream

In the mornings we would use medicaments to prevent chafing of the undercarriage. This particular variety, 'Assos', produces a minty morning tingle in the nether regions. A fine start to the morning.

Leaving on an A road passing by the Devil's Beef Tub as we leave Moffatt.
Very misty and dramatic. A long slow climb with fine views.
A touching memorial to a son/grandson who had died in a road traffic accident.
The descent was very fast with the wind in our sails...

You have to be skilled to manage one of these - this couple were not in our group but visiting.

Out of seasons greetings.

We descended into Edinburgh and hunted for a fine coffee shop. A local (with an American accent) recommended the Brew Lab for connoisseur coffee - nothing but the best.

Very fine coffee!

Thornton Longbow (also known as Peter) looking unusually contemplative.

We navigated through Edinburgh using our Garmin sat nav, notes and following the Sustrans National Cycle Route (NCR) 1 signs.

The cobbles were hard work. I can't imagine racing on them.

I perfected photographing on the move.
Almost

The NCR signposting was excellent, taking us through nooks and crannies, passed some posher parts and along attractive converted railway paths and over rivers.
Route 1 took us all the to our destination in Kinross.
 Forth bridge

There was no room left for any more of these locks.

Breakdown - rear derailer stopped working resulting in loss of all small gears (bad!). Suddenly, lots of would be mechanics offered wise contributions.

Note 4 people involved.

Only one person in the photo new what they were doing.

Sadly, it wasn't a problem at the back derailer, but a non-functioning 'shifter'.
We arrived at Kinross after a delay. All very tired but excellent day. Steve may have to cycle another bike as his ride in allowed him to use on 2 gears.

The hotel was spacious and grand though a little dated. Many of the sockets were large round pin. Staff were friendly and we got to use a Spa over the road.
